Executive Biographies Richard Leupen CEO and Managing Director
Richard Leupen has over thirty years Australian and international experience in engineering and senior management roles across a wide range of industries. Richard joined UGL Limited in September 2000 and since that time has extensively restructured the Group into four businesses, UGL Infrastructure, UGL Rail, UGL Resources and UGL Services. Prior to joining UGL, Richard worked for Australian and international engineering companies including GHD and Kaiser Engineers. As President of Kaiser Engineers he managed 3,500 staff in forty offices worldwide and was based in Washington DC, USA. In his early career, he worked as an engineer and project manager at operations including BHP Port Kembla, Shell Australia and Simcoa Operations. Richard holds a Bachelor of Science (Engineering) degree from the University of NSW, and is a Chartered Professional Engineer, a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers Australia, Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Fellow of the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and a member of the Business Council of Australia. Richard is married with two sons. |
| Rob Bonaccorso Chief Financial Officer Rob Bonaccorso joined UGL in 2007 as the General Manager Finance and Administration. In late 2009 his was appointed Chief Financial Officer. Robert has over 20 years experience in finance and held a number of senior roles in diverse industries bringing with him extensive experience in managing large finance functions with complex structures, including outsourced shared services. Robert also has extensive experience in process re-engineering and business restructures. Prior to joining UGL he held the position of Finance Director for Chubb Security Australia part of the US based United Technologies and before that, headed up Planning and Analysis for the Mayne Nickless Express Group now part of Toll Holdings. Robert holds a Bachelor of Business degree and is a Certified Practicing Accountant. Robert is married and has two children. He enjoys the outdoors, playing golf and cycling. | |
| David Simpson Chief Commercial Officer
David leads UGL’s Strategy, Development, M&A and Major Project teams. David is a Director of Metro Trains Melbourne and the majority of UGL subsidiaries worldwide. David joined UGL Limited as Group General Counsel in June 2006 and was appointed as joint Company Secretary in August 2006. In June 2009, David was appointed Chief Commercial Officer for UGL. Prior to joining UGL, David has worked within engineering and construction companies since 1993. David was General Counsel of Leighton Contractors Pty Ltd where he had a major focus on financed projects and major infrastructure. He has worked internationally with Daimler Chrysler Rail as Global Counsel & Contracts Manager and Asea Brown Boveri in Sydney as Legal Counsel. David holds a Diploma in Law from LPAB, a Masters of Law and Management from UNSW and has attended the Senior Executive Program at London Business School. David is married and has three children. He likes to keep fit by cycling and gym work, whilst being a keen rugby fan. |
| Paul Long Chief Administration Officer
Paul joined UGL Limited in 2001 with the move of the corporate office to North Sydney, to use his skills in the areas of safety, human resources, industrial relations, health and environmental management to strengthen UGL’s operational performance across all divisions. His strong capability in organisational effectiveness has been a driver in the restructuring of the management leadership teams across the company. This restructuring has been the platform from which the organisation has grown from 3,000 to 40,000 people with revenues almost 4 times to over AU$2 billion. From 1999 to 2001, Paul was Business Development Manager for Woodside Technical Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of Woodside Energy Limited. A qualified mechanical engineer, Paul has 30 years experience working across the resource construction sector with 10 years as a principal advisor to Woodside on health, safety and environmental issues. Prior to that, he had major project experience in alumina, iron ore and DRI project construction. Paul’s role significantly strengthens UGL’s top management team and demonstrates to our people and clients our determination to achieve industry leadership in people management. Paul is married and has a teenage son. He likes to spend his spare time outdoors be it swimming or running. |
| Andy Summers Chief Executive, UGL Infrastructure and UGL Rail
 Andy joined UGL Rail in 2005 as Chief Executive and after three years in this role moved to become Chief Executive of UGL Infrastructure.
During his time as Chief Executive of UGL Rail he led the integration of the Alstom Australia and NZ business. Consolidation of major maintenance contracts and extension of major rolling stock construction contracts, combined with the deepening of the GE relationship, strengthened the UGL Rail grip on the sector.
Since joining the Infrastructure business he has managed significant growth in Power and Water sectors.
Andy transferred to Australia with Pirelli Cables in 1995 as Chief Engineer for the Australian and NZ operations. After extensive experience in Manufacturing, Engineering and Quality Assurance, he held the role of CEO of the Australian and NZ operations. In 2002 he became CEO of Pirelli Cables Asia Pacific, having responsibility for Australia, NZ, China, Far Eastern and ASEAN countries. In this role he sat on all Pirelli Cable companies and joint ventures companies in the region.
Andy graduated with a first class honours in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Aston, England in 1984. In 1983 Andy was awarded the City of Birmingham Queen’s Silver Jubilee Engineering award for excellence in engineering.
Andy is married with two daughters and a son and enjoys spending time with his family and keeping fit. | | | | | | Jon Birman Chief Executive, UGL Resources
Jon Birman has more than 25 years experience in corporate roles within the resources sector, specialising in large, multi-discipline projects. He joined UGL in 2002 as Executive General Manager (Group Operations) and was responsible for strategic planning, operations co-ordination, internal restructuring, and mergers and acquisition. Prior to joining UGL, Jon was Deputy Project Director for the Kellog Joint Venture Managing Contractor for LNG Train 4 of the North West Shelf Development Project. His previous experience includes Kaiser Engineering Vice President (International), Hatch Associates and CCIWA. In 2005 Jon was appointed Chief Executive of UGL Resources. Jon is now responsible for the overall performance of UGL Resources, and it’s numerous EPC, construction, asset management and industrial turnaround contracts. Jon holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Australia. He is married with two children, likes music and is an avid water polo player and West Coast Eagles supporter. |

David Nelson Chief Executive Asia Pacific & Middle East, UGL Services David Nelson joined UGL Limited in June 2007. He was initially Chief Development Officer for the UGL Group and in September 2008 David took the role of Chief Executive Asia Pacific and Middle East for the UGL Services business. David has extensive energy industry experience having worked at senior management level in the coal, gas and power industries in Europe, Asia and Australia for more than 25 years. His experience base includes management roles in the domestic and export coal industry, international gas and power industries and in the management of a range of energy related businesses. These roles included extensive business and project management of international joint venture on three continents. David previously worked for CSR, Shell International and was CEO of InterGen Australia. David is a member of advisory committees to Griffith University’s Business School, the Griffith Asia Institute and the Australia String Quartet.
David is married with two children who are at university. |
| Louis Lanzillo Chief Operating Officer, Americas & Europe
Lou joined UGL Limited in September 2007 with the acquisition of UNICCO Service Company, and was appointed to the position of Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the Americas and Europe. Before being named to his new position, Lou joined the executive management team at UGL Unicco in 2004. Under his leadership, he helped UGL Unicco become one of the largest integrated facility service providers in North America, generating over US$750 million in revenue and employing more than 18,000 employees across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, providing solutions to Fortune 1000 and Global 200 companies. Lou has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and is a Certified Public Accountant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. |
| George Keches President, UGL Unicco
George joined UGL Limited in September 2007 with the acquisition of UNICCO Service Company. He was named President in July 2001. Previously Vice President Finance and Administration, Chief Financial officer and Treasurer, he joined UNICCO in 1991. Prior to joining UNICCO, George spent several years at Arthur Andersen & Co., where he worked closely with emerging companies in the technology and manufacturing areas. George has a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Boston College and is a Certified Public Accountant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. George is married with two children. He is Vice President of the Board of Directors of The Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras. |
